If you will search on the Internet you will find unlimited ways to use cardboard boxes for making home décor items. Most common of them are cardboard baskets and cardboard swallow. They are not only functional but a perfect way to decorate your room. Here we are going to discuss step by step procedure to make them.

Cardboard Baskets:

Cardboard baskets are one of the most commonly used up-cycle projects. They are not only practical to use rather they serve as the best way to organize your stuff and make it convenient to find at the hour of need. Now you need not spend your money on purchasing baskets from the market. By using the stuff available in your home, you can convert any dull looking cardboard box to an attractive basket. There are a number of designs to make cardboard baskets. You can make a weaving basket from cardboard strips or a simple one by covering the cardboard box with a rope or fabric. All you require is a little time with some creative thoughts to decorating it in the best way.

 Materials Required:

Cardboard boxes
Paper cutter
Ruler
Pencil
Tape/Glue
A clean surface
Ribbons, beads or other decorative ornaments (optional)

Procedure:

1. Collect a number of custom cardboard boxes of large size. Remove their taped ends to obtain flat sheets of cardboard.
2. Make various strips from these cardboard sheets. It is wise to select their length and width at the start so that a uniform basket is obtained from all sides. For example, cut 20 long strips of cardboard with a width of half an inch each. You may mark the width on the cardboard to make it easy to cut them down.
3. The next step is to weave the base. For this purpose, put five strips on a smooth surface parallel to each other. Put a dot at the center of the third strip. Now take one more set of five strips and weave them carefully through the first five strips. The dot will help you in uniformly arranging the structure. Fold up the strips from four sides. These strips will be called as ribs now.

4. Now it's the time to weave the layers. Take a strip and put one end of it behind the rib. Weave it over and under other ribs. In this way, it will go around the base of the basket. As you get an end to the first layer, use a tape or a glue to make it stick to the last rib. The first step is always difficult to carry out. Repeat the process with the remaining strips.

5. As you finish the weaving of strips, cut out the ribs in such a way that there remains an inch at the top of each strip. Fold the ribs which go by the last layer. You may cut off the remaining part of the ribs for more neatness. Finally, you have done!

6. Decorate the basket in the way you want. Use ribbons, paints, glitter, stickers or other embellishments. You may also keep it simple to enjoy a natural view. It will serve as the best thing to organize your stuff or decorate your room.

Cardboard Swallows:

Cardboard swallows are another handmade wonder. It is one of the easiest crafts you can make from custom packaging boxes. They are not only interesting to make, rather they will serve as a perfect way to decorate your room. You can place them on any shelf or tie them with a string from the roof to make them fly. Kids are extremely fond of such crafts. You can engage your children with you by keeping them busy for hours.

Materials Required:

Cardboard boxes
A template
Black and white paints
Glue stick
String
Buttons
Small red paper

Procedure:

  • 1. First of all, download an online template and print it on a piece of paper. As the template is larger in size so take a paper greater in size than A4. The template consists of various parts like the main body, a long tail, and wing. Make sure that you copied the wing twice.

  • 2. Take large sized custom boxes and cut off their taped ends to obtain flat sheets of cardboard. Copy the template on the cardboard sheet. If you want to cut short the process, purchase black and white cardboard sheet from the market. Print out the template directly on it.
  • 3. For making the body and head of the swallow, bend the strips and staple them close to each other.
  • 4. Fix the head of the swallow to its body. At the same time attach the white parts as well by using a glue stick.

  • 5. Attach the wings. Attach the eyes and beak to make it more attractive. You may use smaller sized buttons to make eyes. Cut a red paper and give it a triangular shape to make its beak.
  • 6. If you have made the swallows from natural colored cardboard or a printed one, use black and white paints to color it. Hang a string through it and attach it to the ceiling fan or a bulb at some height to give a mesmerizing view.
